“A moment’s insight is sometimes worth a life’s experience.” – Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr.
The word insight literally means "to see in". To see into a situation, a problem or a challenge better. Insight always brings clarity, understanding, a new realization - an "aha!" moment. No matter how good someone else's advise or a solution to our problem may seem, a personal insight is exponentially more powerful.
How then can we get more insights? Ironically, thinking harder, brainstorming and problem-solving often fails to produce the desired results. And then, it hits us, when we least expect it, usually in the middle of washing dishes or taking a shower.
Just like it's hard to see the bottom of the ocean during stormy weather - it's impossible to see into a situation if our mind is in a state of upheaval. Yet, when the wind subsides and the waves settle, the ocean becomes clear and we see the beautiful sand, shells and rocks on the bottom. So, it is with our mind - when the thoughts and emotions settle - we have new clarity of thought. An insight emerges..
Anything that allows you to relax and just be is a fertile ground for fresh insight. The key is to clear the mind and there are many ways to do it, here are a few of my favorites:
taking a walk
time in nature
meditation or quiet time
So, whenever you feel blocked and unable to find the right solution or have a dilemma - give it some time, take a walk, get in a shower, meditate and discover how you can see the situation with the new sight.
